Guide Towards Self-Love

People find themselves trying so hard to achieve the impossible, society's perception of perfection. However, when you realize that life is better spent loving yourself, rather fixing all your imperfections, your life will truly have a turn of events (for the better of course!). When you love yourself, you will begin to notice how much your life prospers. Similarly to life goals, when your heart is in it, you eventually achieve each and every goal.


Once you find something you love, you begin to feel a sense of happiness. Which brings back to the idea of self-love, once you have conquers hatred towards yourself and begin loving yourself, it is a step closer to happiness and all life has to offer. As Robert Morley once said "To fall in love with yourself is the first secret to happiness"


And here are 5 ways that can begin your journey


1. Affirmations

If you do not know where to start when it comes to self-love, start by waking up everyday and saying something positive about yourself. This called affirmations, it is a way of managing your thoughts. It is said that if you have a negative mindset, you will most likely attract negativity in your life. And if you have a positive mind set, you are simply attracting positivism. Now this can be difficult if you are figuring out how to start loving yourself. But everyday, say something you love about yourself no matter how small it may be, start somewhere.


2. Treat Yourself

If you don't like being alone, try spending a day all to yourself at least twice a month. Figure out what makes you smile. Whether it is eating out at your favorite restaurant or going shopping. This will give a sense of peace, a start to independence. Once you start focusing on yourself- you will start understanding what it takes to make YOU happy. If ordering take-out and watching romance movies make you happy, then do it. As long as you are treating yourself and making yourself the priority. Remember it is not selfish, it is simply self-love.


3. Express Your Emotions

I understand that some people find difficulty in expression. However, it is extremely important to voice your concerns or even voice when you are happy as well. Expression helps not keep all your emotions bottled in. Now the best part of expression is that it comes in different forms. From arts to creative writing.


You can dance your emotions (my personal favorite), draw your emotions, write about your emotions, etc. Find something that you find peace in doing and express how you feel doing that thing. This way if you are upset or sad, you're expressing that anger doing something that makes you peaceful.


So how does this build self-love? In expression you are able to determine what makes you feel a certain way and reflect those feelings. This way you can tell someone how you feel if they are making you feel a negative emotion. Standing your ground, making sure that you are finding ways to keep a healthy relationship with your surroundings.


4. Create a Diary

Through my journey to self-love, this was one of my personal favorites. Write about your worst days and your happiest days. This way you can reflect on what made the days be considered one of the worst and what made the days be considered on of the best. So you can help yourself avoid those worst days. Having more happy days than worse days. Because for every happy day, means that you are living life to the fullest. And living life to the fullest is truly a step closer to self-love.


5. Stop Comparing Yourself to Others

I cannot stress this enough, going through social media can be extremely difficult. Seeing models with thin figures and being praised for their appearance can truly be heartbreaking when you look in the mirror and find yourself not looking like them. But why look like them when you can look like YOURSELF. Remember everyone has struggles, those models you see online may not even be as confident as they portray themselves to be. The media is fake, everything on social media is what they want you to see. You shouldn't look like those models, because you are your own model. You are truly beautiful and when look at yourself in the mirror stop focusing on what you don't have and start focusing on the beauty of what you do have.
